Cloud server volumes
Overview
We provide the Cloud Server Volumes service as an additional storage option to the Cloud Servers service of ours. The service allows for the persistent storage of data on volumes that can be attached to cloud servers as block storage devices. A physical hard drive is an example of a traditional block device; you can think of a block storage device as of a physical hard drive or USB stick, but more reliable.
Creating a New Volume
You can create a new volume using a simple one-page wizard in the "Cloud Servers > Volumes" section of the Customer Portal. You can also use the OpenStack API to create volumes.
Restoring a Backup to a New Volume
You can restore a backup of a volume as a new volume using the volume creation wizard.
Attaching a Volume to a Cloud Server
You can attach a volume to a cloud server at the volume creation time. Alternatively, you can do it later from a "Volume details" page in the Customer Portal. Volume can only be attached to a single cloud server instance at a given time, but also can be detached from one instance and attached to another.
