Yes, our forex VPS servers are run on Windows-based hypervisors meaning we support Windows-based software, including MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5 and cTrader.
Every VPS has a trading platform client (MetaTrader or cTrader) installed. It connects to your trading servers in the same way a regular PC does - via the network. You can install Expert Advisors or any other automation software on the VPS, just like on a traditional computer.
While both a VPS and a home computer can connect to trading platforms, the VPS usually resides in closer proximity to trading servers, often in the same data center. This ensures a VPS can offer lower latency and therefore faster order execution.
VPS and VPN are two distinct technologies for different purposes:
VPS (Virtual Private Server): A virtual computer located in a data center
VPN (Virtual Private Network): Technology designed to encrypt your entire internet connection
Using a VPN when connecting to a VPS adds an extra layer of security. It prevents your Internet Service Provider (ISP) from monitoring your online traffic and understanding your connectivity (they won’t be able to tell that you are connected to a VPS).
But even without a VPN, your connection to a VPS remains secure and encrypted: the modern Windows Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) has inherent encryption, operating similarly to an HTTPS-enabled website.
A dedicated IP address is not necessary, but it greatly improves your trading experience. One bad actor sharing an IP address might shut down your connection to a trading server for several hours, or even a whole day.
In order to access your VPS when it shares an IP address with other traders you have to add a "port number" to the address of your server. This may pose problems when:
Your RDP client doesn't support this
That port is blocked by the ISP (most likely to happen on a public WiFi in a cafe, hotel etc.)
To avoid these issues, each of our forex VPS servers is assigned its own unique IP address meaning that VPS servers on our platform don’t share IP addresses.
Since a VPS is a virtual machine working somewhere in a data center, you just need a device capable of connecting to the internet (e.g., any laptop with Windows, an iPhone or Android smartphone, a TV, or a Linux-based PC).
When talking about requirements for a VPS itself, that depends on the number of MetaTrader instances you would like to run on it. For one MT instance, 1 CPU with 1 GB RAM is enough. When you want to run more MetaTrader clients on one VPS, you will need to choose something more powerful.
These are our recommendations:
2-3 terminals, 2 CPU, 2 GB RAM
4-6 terminals, 4 CPU, 4 GB RAM
7+ terminals, 8 CPU, 8 GB RAM
As for the disk space, the MetaTrader client doesn't have a particularly significant disk footprint, but 30GB is our recommended minimum. Just keep an eye on the log folders which may fill up quickly if you execute a lot of trades.
C:\Users\<your login name>\AppDataRoaming\MetaQuotes\Terminal\<loong ID>\Logs
C:\Users\<your login name>\AppData\Roaming\MetaQuotes\Terminal\<loong ID>\MQL<4 or 5>\Logs
HDD (Hard Disk Drive):
Composition: Consists of rotating metal discs with a magnetic coating
Cost: Generally less expensive than SSD
Speed: Tends to be slower in retrieving data compared to SSD
SSD (Solid State Drive):
Composition: Made from flash memory, similar to the one found in USB sticks
Cost: Typically more expensive than HDD for the same storage capacity
Speed: Provides near-instantaneous data access, significantly faster than HDD
For MetaTrader client (forex VPS), we recommend using HDD for regular traders. The MetaTrader client is not a particularly disk-intensive application, therefore disk subsystem speed is not important, but using HDD allows you to optimize your VPS costs.
For trading servers, disk speed is crucial, as they host a database containing all trade data. We strongly recommend using SSD here, to ensure quick updates and a smooth trading operation.
