Connecting Indifferent Broccoli’s gamers to their own private worlds at the click of a button

Indifferent Broccoli

While it may have caused many things to be put on hold, the pandemic was the catalyst for the birth of a new game server hosting and rental company - Indifferent Broccoli. After deciding to take a year out from Stanford’s Graduate School of Business, founder Jake Gaba wanted to put what he’d already learned into practice with an entrepreneurial project.

Rather than starting from scratch, Jake decided to buy a business in the space that he had a passion for and purchased a video game server hosting business. Originally called 7d2dserverhosting.com, the business as it was provided hosting solutions for survival horde crafting game 7 Days to Die.

Jake wanted to diversify his offering so expanded into providing server hosting and rental for survival game Valheim with vikingserverhosting.com. Seeing success with the two websites, the next natural step for Jake was to set up a central hub that he could build on and add support for different games. With that step, Indifferent Broccoli was born.

Today, Indifferent Broccoli provides gamers with private game server hosting and rental for ten popular games and counting. But how did it get there?

“servers.com support is 1000x better than anyone else. It’s reassuring that I can post a message in Discord and get a response from a human who understands me and my needs.”

The Challenge

“Our gamer customers are who I was at high school. I have a very good understanding of what they want - and that’s simplicity and speed. It’s possible to set up your own private server at home but it requires quite a bit of tech knowledge. It also takes an hour or two and no gamer wants to wait that long. I wanted to provide a service where gamers can rent a server and connect to their own private world at the click of a button.”

That service includes automatic set up and a custom-built control panel that helps gamers manage their servers, including the choice to make them private, public, or invite-only. By custom building its control panel, Indifferent Broccoli can adapt its products and services to meet customer requirements quicker.

To make Indifferent Broccoli stand out from other providers, Jake recognized that quality hardware and support are vital to ensure reliability of service.

“It’s Friday night and you’ve had school or work all week. This is your one chance to play but the servers have gone down. That’s not a service that people are going to return to. We needed to ensure that our servers are reliably up when our customers have that limited window of opportunity to hang out with their friends. servers.com helps us provide that reliable service.”

“If a new game or update is coming out, we need to prepare for a new influx of users. servers.com can spin up new machines quickly, meaning that I can rest easy as the new customers roll in.”

The Solution

Indifferent Broccoli needed to source servers from providers with locations across the US to serve customers. With our west coast and central locations in California and Texas, servers.com has good availability of quality machines where Indifferent Broccoli customers are situated.

“If a new game or update is coming out, we need to prepare for a new influx of users. servers.com can spin up new machines quickly, meaning that I can rest easy as the new customers roll in.”

Key to providing that confident service is great customer support, which Indifferent Broccoli prides itself on. Unlike other game server hosting and rental companies, Indifferent Broccoli’s customer support is provided in the platform most suited to its customers, and even by customers themselves.

“Support through email is slow. Our customers hang out on Discord, so that is where we deliver most of our support. In fact, we recruited our customer support team from an announcement in our Discord server. We received a lot of interest for the roles, and now I have a friendly, chill, and dedicated support team. As we grow, I plan to continue recruiting from my customer base."

“I wanted to work with an infrastructure provider that shares similar values. servers.com fits the bill. They provide a personal approach to customer support. I know my account managers on a human level, which is a special thing to say about a server supplier.”

Like Indifferent Broccoli, servers.com support is provided by real people, on the platforms that its customer use.

“servers.com support is 1000x better than anyone else. It’s reassuring that I can post a message in Discord and get a response from a human who understands me and my needs. And the team is on top of news in the gaming world. More than once, they've given me a heads up when a new big game update is coming out. They proactively help me prepare for the influx.”

The Future

With business school coming to an end in summer 2023, Jake’s plan is to keep building on the success of Indifferent Broccoli and make it the go-to destination for hosting and renting private game servers.

“The reliability and support of servers.com gives me the confidence that whether Indifferent Broccoli has 1000 or a million customers, we’ll still be able to provide the same consistency of service and brand. I want Indifferent Broccoli to continue to be a friendly and familiar game server hosting company that gamers can rely on. The human touch of servers.com alongside our own will allow us to retain our ‘indifferent’ personality as we take over the virtual world.”
